Caochangdi PhotoSpring is an exclusive three-year collaboration with the Rencontres d’Arles that brings exhibitions and events from the famed international photography festival to Beijing. Inspired by the successful Impossible Exhibition at Rencontres d'Arles Photography Festival 2010, Impossible was invited to present analog instant photography artworks at Caochangdi PhotoSpring. Rather than showing the original Impossible Exhibition presented in Arles, a completely new and international exhibition has been put together for the occasion.
Curated by Valerie Hersleven, four Chinese and four European photographers have been creating unique analog photographs shot on the latest Impossible instant films: Christoph Morlinghaus, Hervé Plumet, Huang Xiaoliang 黄晓亮, Julia Fullerton-Batten, Michael Schnabel, Mo Yi 莫毅, Qiu 丘 and Zhang Xiao 张晓.

The
Photographers
Christoph Morlinghaus
Christoph’s often large scale work mirrors the size of the cities and places that are subjects, where people don't seem to exist, which gives an almost surreal, hyper-real feel.
Hervé Plumet
In his way, Hervé allows pictures to come to life, using light and shadow as a message to be read, leading to the communication of sincere universal emotions.
Huang Xiaoliang 黄晓亮
Huang Xiaoliang’s photography plays with the nature of the medium by presenting scenes constructed of shadows projected onto walls or other surfaces. The resultant works are steeped in memory and fantasy, simultaneously idyllic and haunting.
Julia Fullerton-Batten
In each of her photos, Julia tells a story, and transforms what could be a simple picture into a dreamlike and precarious full of life world.
Michael Schnabel
At night, everything becomes quiet - a very important aspect for the landscape photography of Michael Schnabel.
Mo Yi 莫毅
With a discerning and artful lens, Mo Yi’s photography documents and examines the transformation of urban China over the past thirty years.
Qiu 丘
Qiu's photography is delicate and subtle. His images are fragments of silent poetry, full of nostalgia and memory for one’s “spiritual home”.
Zhang Xiao 张晓
Zhang Xiao’s photographs capture fleeting encounters with the sometimes bizarre, often arbitrary and always captivating face of contemporary China and its inhabitants.
